Starscroller

Privacy policy

Last updated 21 October 2026

Starscroller helps you keep a wishlist, share it with family and friends, and keep gift ideas for other people. This page explains, in plain English, what information we collect, why, who helps us run the service, and the choices you have. Starscroller is currently in a private trial.

Who we are

Starscroller (starscroller.com) is responsible for your information as the "data controller" under UK data protection law (the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018). For any privacy question or request, email privacy@starscroller.com.

What we collect

  • Account details: your email address and the display name you choose. If you sign in with Google, Google shares your name, email address and profile picture with us.
  • Age check: we ask for your date of birth only to confirm you are 18 or over. We record that the check passed and when. We do not store your date of birth.
  • What you add: wishlist items (names, links, images, prices, priorities, sizes, colours, private notes), your sizes and preferences for gift givers, and gift ideas, including the names you give to the people they are for.
  • Sharing and reservations: which lists you share, who joins them, and any gift you mark as reserved or bought on someone else's list.
  • Settings: your display currency and shopping region.
  • Technical data: a sign-in cookie that keeps you logged in, and standard server logs (such as IP address and browser type) kept by our hosting provider for security and reliability. Your light or dark mode choice is stored only on your device.

We do not use advertising or tracking cookies, we do not run analytics that profile you, and we never sell your information.

How we use it, and why we're allowed to

  • To provide the service you sign up for: your account, your lists, sharing and reservations. Legal basis: performing our agreement with you.
  • To keep the service secure, prevent abuse and fix problems. Legal basis: our legitimate interest in running a safe, reliable service.
  • To send sign-in codes and essential service emails. We don't send marketing.

Who can see your lists

Your lists are private unless you share them. When you share a list, people with the link (or the people you invite) can see the items you chose to share and your sizes and preferences. They never see your private notes. If someone reserves a gift on your list, other viewers can see it so they don't buy the same thing, but you can't, so the surprise is kept. When you reserve a gift on someone else's list, other people viewing that list see your display name next to it.

Services that help us run Starscroller

We use these providers, who handle data on our behalf under contract:

  • Supabase: database, sign-in and image storage. Our data is held in the European Union (Ireland).
  • Vercel: hosts the website and runs it on servers around the world, including in the United States.
  • Resend: sends our sign-in emails, from the European Union (Ireland).
  • Google: only if you choose "Continue with Google" to sign in.
  • Anthropic: when our alternatives finder launches, product details of an item (for example its name, brand and link) will be sent to Anthropic's AI service to find cheaper and higher-end options. We won't send your name, email or notes for this.

Exchange rates come from the European Central Bank via a public service; no personal information is sent for this. When information is handled outside the UK, we rely on the legal safeguards these providers offer for international transfers.

How long we keep it

We keep your information while you have an account. If you ask us to delete your account, we delete your profile, lists, items and reservations. Backups and logs held by our providers expire on their own schedules, normally within weeks.

Your rights

You can ask to see, correct, download or delete your information, or object to how we use it. Email privacy@starscroller.com and we'll respond within one month. You can also complain to the UK Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk), though we'd appreciate the chance to help first.

Age

Starscroller is for people aged 18 and over. We don't knowingly collect information from anyone younger.

Changes

If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top, and tell you in the app if the change is significant.
